Queensbury man nominated for humanitarian award
September 28, 2007
Special to The Post-Star QUEENSBURY -- If the Tatars of Queensbury ever decide to chronicle their
family history, the events of 2007 should probably all be written in capital letters.
Oldest son Ben Tatar graduated from Adirondack Community College in May, beating the odds that a
young person challenged by behaviors consistent with autism spectrum disorder could complete
college.

Bomber's Burrito Night is Delicious and Successful
April 15, 2007
Despite monsoon-like
conditions in the Capital District, over one-hundred and
fifty people braved the weather and made their way down to
Bombers Burrito Bar in Albany, NY on Sunday April 15th
to help raise money for RollingForAutism. Friends, family,
and many local college and graduate students from Union
College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Albany Medical
College, Albany College of Pharmacy, and Albany Law School
connected to help raise $2000!
The money will go
directly to RollingForAutism, a foundation established by Union
College senior, Dan Tatar. The foundation is made up of over 50
college students, a group of which will be rollerblading from
Florida to Maine this summer to raise money and to increase
awareness of Autism. The money will provide scholarship
opportunities for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum
Disorders. RollingForAutism is part of ADK Charities, Inc.,
which is the only foundation in the United States aimed at
increasing awareness of Autism in high school students, college
students, and young adults, as they are the scientists, doctors,
politicians, and parents of the future. The event held at
Bombers did exactly that. With the large number of colleges in
the Albany area, we were able to bind together a large group of
young adults for one common cause!
Many thanks goes
to everyone who helped plan the event, whether it was organizing
the event, gathering people to attend, selling raffle tickets
and t-shirts, or just showing up! If anyone is interested in
helping raise funds this spring and summer by contacting local
businesses, contact Glenn at
sandeg2@rpi.edu
Thanks again for
all your help and thank you Bombers!

University
of Vermont Students Hold a Scavenger Hunt For RollingForAutism
April 21, 2007
On Saturday April 21st
roughly fifty University of Vermont students and special guest
skaters Dan Tatar and Sean Streich came together in
Burlington, Vermont to support RollingForAutism. Tatar,
RollingForAutism founder, was ecstatic to be a part of the
activities and promote this cause on a beautiful Saturday
afternoon in Burlington, Vermont. Elaine Lambrinos,
RollingForAutism nurse and skater, coordinated the event with
help from fellow skater, Amber Leenstra and Sara Gambee.
The day was a success as friends came together to
participate in a scavenger hunt throughout the town of
Burlington. Although everyone was extremely competitive,
students spent the afternoon laughing together and happy to
raise money for such a great cause!
Eight teams were
randomly formed consisting of eight "hunters."
Team members were called the morning of the hunt and given
their team's color to wear for the day. Everyone
gathered at 2 o’clock to meet their teammates and talk trash
to opponents. The games began with a relay race where
participants exchanged t-shirts and basketball shorts (of
course over our outfits) with their teammates. After
finishing the activity, teams were sent out around Burlington
to find different clues. Clues ranged from find a jar of
pickles to get your picture taken with a woman walking her
dog. In between each clue all teams returned to home
base to prove to the judges that they completed the clue by a
camera phone picture. Double points were given to teams
who were in hand stands for the picture. Team blue,
which Tatar and Streich were a part of, even did a pyramid
with their group- triple points for them! The first team
to complete all clues was the winner. Prize? Bragging
rights….better than any gift! It was a slow start for
team white but they had an impressive come back to take the
cake in the end! Team green came in as close runners up
only ten seconds later.
The running helped
Tatar and Streich get their retired bodies in shape for this
summer's journey. It was an amazing day for
all. Students had fun and enjoyed donating to help
autism. The day proved to be a success as about $300 was
raised and RollingForAutism was spread throughout the
Burlington community.

The Pink Team,(R-L)
Elaine Lambrinos, Sarah
Gambee, and Amber Leenstra organized The
Event.
Tatar Keynote Speaker at Awards Banquet
December 8, 2006
This past Wednesday, RollingForAutism Founder Dan Tatar addressed a large crowd as the keynote speaker at the Loomis Chaffee Fall Athletic Banquet. The coat and tie ceremony attended by students, faculty, and alumni commemorated one of the most successful athletic seasons in school history.
Tatar shared his story as an athlete with the crowd, and how the end of his college hockey career led to the birth of his current passion RollingForAutism. Tatar invited everyone in the room to join the RollingForAutism Team, and challenged the athletes in the room to carry the same passion brought everyday to the playing field wherever life may take them.
The speech was well received by those in attendance, and we look forward to working with the Loomis Chaffee Community in the near future. For more information, please check out the Loomis Chaffee Website.
Mr. Union 2006
November 9, 2006
On Thursday, November 9th, nearly 350 students packed into Union College's Old Chapel to watch the First Annual Mr. Union Pageant. The pageant featured 10 of Union's finest men, as they competed in a formal wear, swimsuit, talent, and question and answer round. The pageant was organized and put on by the pledge class of Delta Delta Delta with all of the proceeds going towards RollingForAutism.
The pageant quickly became the most highly anticipated event on campus, and hosts Sara Wilson, Linsey Wrenhum, and the contestants made sure not to disappoint. The night started with a formal wear round where each of the contestants strutted across the stage to the MC Hammer classic, "You Cant Touch This." The highlight of this round was the revealing of special guest contestant, West Dining Hall chef Stefan Krul, known campus wide for his good looks and his buffalo chicken pasta.
Next came the swimsuit competition. It was evident that several of the
contestants had spent hours in the gym working their biceps, triceps, abs,
and chest, preparing to look their best in their beachwear. In an effort
to gain any sort of advantage over the competition, several of the
contestants sported Speedos earning themselves bonus points with the three
judges. Sophomore standout, Matt Douglas' bright yellow Speedo with purple
butterflies was a fan favorite.
The third round, and by far the highlight of the night was the talent
round. The contestants showed that they were not only some of the most
talented men at Union College, but possibly across the country. The women
in the crowd melted as several contestants sang love songs and the homeboys
in the crowd danced in their chairs as two contestants rapped. Highlights
of the round and of the night include Josh Coyle's brilliant performance of
"Hot Cross Buns" on recorder, and Eddie Speno's stand up comedy performance
that had people in the audience out of their chairs laughing. However, Jon
Greklek stole the show and the competition with his hip-hop to country to
Irish folk dance act. The crowd came to their feet as Greklek floated
across the stage in black tights and a sparkly shirt, demonstrating to
everyone in Old Chapel that he not only could River Dance, but in fact, was
The River Dance.
The three judges; Tri Delta President Liz Henry, SDT President Lauren Brickman, and RollingForAutism Founder Dan Tatar had their work cut out for them. Third place was awarded to Stefan Krul and second prize to Eddie Speno. Jon Greklek was named "Mr. Union," and instantly broke down crying upon the announcement.
The night was a huge success, and we hope that this pageant becomes a
yearly event. Over a thousand dollars was raised to support
RollingForAutism. We want to thank the Tri Delta Pledge Class, the
contestants, the judges, and everyone in attendance. This event became the
most highly anticipated event of the term, and everyone delivered a night
not to be forgotten.

Training Has Begun
October 17, 2006
The RollingForAutism skaters have wasted no time in getting into shape for this June’s skate. It is our goal to periodically give updates and insights into our training methods, experiences, and progress.
Currently, the RollingForAutism skaters (well at least those not in the midst of hockey season or term abroad in Japan) have been taking to the road five days a week for ten to fifteen mile skates. Our route consists of winding country roads through upstate New York and over the past three weeks, we have become quite friendly with many of the people who live along our route.
This past Monday, October 17, a photography team followed Carson and Dan as they hit the road for a late afternoon autumn skate.

First Annual Tri-Sorority Cup
October 10, 2006
This fall, the three Union College sororities (Sigma Delta Thau, Delta Delta Delta, Gamma Phi) will be competing in the first annual Tri-Sorority Cup. Masterminded by RollingForAutism Skater, Kelly Lannan, the Tri-Soroity Cup is a fundraising competition between the pledge classes of each sorority with the proceeds to be donated to a charity selected by the presidents of the three sororities. This year, RollingForAutism is honored to be selected as the recipient of all of the proceeds.
Over the past week, Tri-Soroity Cup founder Kelly Lannan and RollingForAutism founder Dan Tatar met with each sorority to discuss the competition and the charity benefiting from each sororities efforts. As hoped, the pledges were excited not only to have the opportunity to challenge their rival pledge classes, but more importantly, to raise money for a great cause. Gamma Phi Pledge Jessica Stein remarked "all of the girls are real excited about this idea."
The presidents of the sororities are excited to have an event that brings all three sororities together, all working towards one great cause. Delta Delta Delta President Liz Henry commented, " I think this opportunity to band together and have the force of 350 women working towards the common cause of raising money for autism is great. All the women in our house are looking forward to getting together with the other two houses to raise as much money as possible."
RollingForAutism Founder Dan Tatar stated, "Its an honor to have been chosen as the recipient of the proceeds for the inaugural Tri-Sorority Cup and we look forward to working with each sorority." Stay tuned to find out how much money will be raised and which sorority will be housing the cup!!!
Karaoke Night a Success!
October 7, 2006
On Friday, October 6th, over 100 Union students poured into Gepetto's Bar and Restaurant to support RollingForAutism. One of the many perks was the ability to belt out their favorite karaoke tunes. The event, coordinated by Paul Lichorat, owner of Gepetto's, and seniors Liz Glasson and Shelby Cherin, consisted of four hours of drink specials, food, singing, dancing, and fun.
Highlights of the night included an emotional and heart wrenching performance of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" by several of the sisters of the Sigma Delta Thou Sorority and a performance of the Backstreet Boy's late 90's chart topper, "I Want It That Way" by seniors David Schneidman, Billy Condon and Brendan Merrell that made most of the ladies in attendance feel weak in the knees. All genres of music were represented, as were all singing talent levels.
The night proved to be a success as about $500 was raised and smiles were seen all around. RollingForAutism continues to pick up momentum as more and more individuals continue to join the cause. We would like to thank Gepetto's Bar and Restaurant for hosting the event and donating the DJ, as well as everyone who came out.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our next event! |
